In the true spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, HTA School of Culinary Art proudly joined hands with Chefs with Compassion (CWC), NOSH Food Rescue, students, chefs and community members to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity.
Inspired by Nelson Mandela’s call for every person to dedicate 67 minutes to making the world a better place, the initiative formed part of the nationwide 67,000 Litres for Nelson Mandela Day campaign. A highlight of the day was the official announcement ceremony hosted at HTA, where students were challenged to create innovative canapés using surplus ingredients generously rescued and supplied by NOSH Food Rescue, showcasing the creativity and potential of rescued food while reinforcing the importance of reducing food waste.
Thanks to the incredible generosity, dedication and teamwork of everyone involved, the campaign exceeded all expectations.
Together, volunteers prepared an outstanding 113,610 litres of nutritious soup, far surpassing the original target of 67,000 litres. The soup will provide thousands of warm, nourishing meals to vulnerable individuals and families through an extensive network of community organisations and distribution partners.
Every litre of soup represents hope, compassion and the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela. We extend our sincere gratitude to every volunteer, donor, partner, chef, student and supporter who contributed to this extraordinary effort.
HTA School of Culinary Art is honoured to have played a role in this impactful initiative, providing students with the opportunity to use their culinary skills to make a tangible difference while embracing the values of service, compassion and social responsibility.
As South Africans continue to face the challenges of food insecurity, initiatives such as these highlight the power of collaboration and remind us that lasting change begins when individuals come together in service of others.
